Surviving For Her Son

Pattie Mallette’s path to motherhood was marked by trauma, difficult choices, and an unshakable determination to protect her baby. In a candid interview reflecting on her memoir, she described years of sexual abuse that left her burdened with shame and self-blame, and a teenage suicide attempt connected to prolonged pain, depression, and substance abuse. She recalled how drugs and alcohol worsened everything and contributed to what she called a breaking point, and she linked her feelings to what many survivors endure, emphasizing how shame can make a person feel inherently flawed. These early experiences formed the backdrop for the moment she discovered she was pregnant and forced her to consider what kind of future she wanted for herself and her child.

At 17, Mallette learned she was pregnant with Justin and immediately faced pressure to end the pregnancy. She explained that she knew she could not go through with an abortion, even though she did not know how she would manage as a young, single mother. Instead, she resolved to do her best and give her baby a chance. Mallette remembers Justin’s first cry as sounding like music and calls it the most precious sound she had ever heard, a moment that confirmed her desire never to let him go. Over time, her journey from a troubled past to raising one of the world’s most famous pop stars became, in her memoir and reflections, a story of resilience, faith, and unconditional love, centered on her commitment to giving Justin the best life she could and on finding purpose beyond her earlier suffering.
