What happened to Christa Gail Pike is now as much a medical horror story as it is a legal and moral one. Surviving two failed lethal injections means her body has absorbed a massive dose of a powerful barbiturate while her brain may have been starved of oxygen during the chaos.

Dr Joel Zivot warns that every second of delayed resuscitation raises the risk of permanent brain injury: memory loss, personality changes, seizures, chronic pain, even a lifetime of cognitive impairment that can never be undone.
