Eleanor was twenty-one when her college sweetheart, Thomas, disappeared during a wartime mission. With no recovered remains or definitive explanation, she spent decades caught between mourning and hope. Then Captain Daniel Mercer, who had known Thomas during their service, delivered a letter preserved by Thomas’s former commanding officer.
Its handwriting appeared consistent with his earlier correspondence, although authentication and the accompanying military records still required review. Daniel offered no promise that Thomas had survived, only honesty about what remained unknown.
The letter recalled their university days and expressed a love that separation had not erased. It could not explain the disappearance, but it restored a deeply personal connection Eleanor feared was lost forever. At the memorial that afternoon, she placed her customary white rose beneath Thomas’s name. She still wanted answers. Yet with new documents to examine and familiar words to hold close, she could finally imagine moving forward without leaving him behind.
