Modern online publishing is built around competition for attention.

Thousands of stories are published every hour.

News organizations, blogs, social media accounts, and entertainment websites all compete for the same audience.

As a result, headlines have become increasingly dramatic.

A headline rarely says:

“Authorities release details regarding motel death investigation.”

Instead, it may say:

“Pastor Died in a Motel With… What Police Found Next Shocked Everyone.”

The difference is obvious.

One informs.

The other creates suspense.

This style of writing is often referred to as the “curiosity gap.”

The headline provides just enough information to spark interest but withholds enough details to encourage readers to continue.

In many cases, the actual story turns out to be far less sensational than the headline implies.

That does not mean the story is unimportant.

It simply means the headline is optimized to maximize clicks.

Readers should remember this whenever they encounter emotionally charged or incomplete headlines online.

The strongest emotional reactions often occur before the facts have been presented.
